Five Things to Ask Yourself Before Visiting a Cosmetic Dentist

Cosmetic Dentist
When you visit a cosmetic dentist, this is your opportunity to transform the appearance of your smile and correct anything that you don’t like. With most things in life, you can fix some problems but not all.  This is not the case with a cosmetic dentist.  You can have a complete smile makeover if you want one, or you can simply whiten your teeth.  The range of options available to you are vast so it is important to understand what it is that you are trying to accomplish so that we can create a customized treatment plan for you.

Start by considering what you do like about your smile.  For example, you may like the current size and shape of your teeth.  If you do, let us know so that we can focus on other areas instead of addressing things that you already like.  Next, make a list of everything that you don’t like about your smile and would like to improve.  This can include your “must have” list and a secondary list of things that you would like to accomplish.  During your consultation, we will want to discuss all of this so that we can address each problem individually or as a group.
Some of the things that we will want to know are:

How white do you want your teeth?  This is based on personal preference so what works for one person may not for someone else.  You have to live with your smile, so it is important that it is a shade of white you are comfortable with.  While some people like brilliantly white teeth, others do not so it helps to look at samples.  This will give us a benchmark for how white to get your teeth.

Are you comfortable with the shape of your teeth?  It is common for teeth to be too large or too small for a person’s mouth.  This creates problems with appearance as teeth can look immature like baby teeth or too large like rabbit teeth.  If you have either of these issues, they can be corrected in our cosmetic dentistry office.

Do you have anything that needs replacing?  If you have had a restoration in the past few decades, it may be worn out and need to be replaced.  Things like dental crowns, for example, are only supposed to last for up to fifteen years.  Once they reach that point they can start to wear away, and your teeth can become sensitive again.  Let us know if you are experiencing any irritation or sensitivity so that we can look at your old restorations during your dental exam.  Simultaneously, if you have any new health concerns, we want to know so that we can address them.

Are your gums the right size?  If your gums are too large, you will see more of your gums when you smile than is visually appealing.  If this is happening to you, we can correct them with a cosmetic dentistry procedure.
What don’t you like about your teeth?  Make a list that you can share with us when you visit our dental office so that we can plan for how to address each issue.

As a cosmetic dentist, we can transform your smile but it starts with a dental exam and good communication.  Think of us as your teammate in good oral health, one that can take you over the finish line as long as we know what the finish line is.

Here Are Common Causes of Gum Recession

Gum Recession
Gum recession is a very common dental problem that occurs in a large number of Americans. Described as the process whereby the gum tissue gradually pulls backward or wears down, gum recession can leave you with hyper exposed teeth or even have the gum exposed to the surface. In addition, this problem can cause there to be pockets and gaps in between the teeth, which make it easier for infections to occur due to the bacteria building up within these gaps or pockets. Most people do not realize that they are experiencing gum recession since it is an extremely slow process. However, it is strongly advised to seek dental, or orthodontic, treatment for gum recession as left untreated it will result in repeated infections that can ultimately damage the structure of the teeth, bone, and gums.

Periodontists treat gum recession and know that seeking treatment is critical to your mouth's overall health. Unlike many gum diseases, gum recession can occur naturally and is often caused by habits that erode the gums over time. There are other factors as to why gum recession occurs, some more serious than other, and there are a number of treatment options that you should consider and go over in depth in our dentist office.
So what causes gum recession in the first place?

Gum recession can be caused by a number of factors. Some of these are –

•    Aggressive tooth brushing can cause the gums to start to wear away. People who have a tendency to brush their teeth too hard or use an extremely hard toothbrush run the risk of rubbing away their gums that can ultimately lead to the gums receding. Excessive or overly aggressive brushing can also lead to the enamel on the teeth being worn away, which can also lead to gum recession.
•    Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection that will attack your gums. The direct result of this is that your gums will start to recede, leading to gum recession along with a host of other complications. This bacteria will destroy the gums and the bones that hold your teeth in place making it imperative that you seek treatment immediately if you suspect that you have gum recession as a result of periodontal disease.
•    Just like aggressive brushing of the teeth can lead to the gums starting to recede, getting insufficient dental care can also lead to this condition. If the teeth are not cleaned enough, tartar builds up on the teeth. Also known as calculus, this build up can only be removed by extensive professional dental cleaning which can also lead to the gums receding.
•    Bad habits like the use of tobacco are direct causes of gum recession as well. Tobacco users are more likely to have sticky plaque on their teeth that can result in the gums being affected and ultimately wearing down. In a similar manner, people with tongue or lip piercings are at a higher risk for gum recession. The stud in a piercing will constantly rub  against the gums, causing irritation and ultimately a level of erosion which leads to the gums receding as well.

Modern Technology and the Cosmetic Dentist – A Perfect Pair

Cosmetic Dentist
Technology has revolutionized what a cosmetic dentist can do. Just like the cell phone made communicating easier and a microwave made it possible to heat up meals quickly, modern dental inventions have made it possible to save teeth and transform smiles.  Without innovation, patients would still be getting infected teeth pulled on a regular basis.  We use new technology whenever possible and continue to learn about improved techniques so that our patients can benefit from an improved experience overall.

One of the major changes in modern dentistry occurred in the 1980s with the invention of resin cement.  In the 70s, dentists started to realize the value of bonding procedures but were unable to do so on a regular basis.  When resin cement was invented, it became possible to bond a crown to a natural tooth which made a crown more durable and reduced the risk of it falling off or slipping.  Prior to that silver amalgam crowns were the go to solution for restoring and protecting teeth.  With the wide use of resin cement, it became possible to use all-ceramic crowns and receive a similar level of durability.

As a cosmetic dentist, many of the procedures we use today evolved from that one simple invention.  Dental crowns are used on a regular basis to restore and protect damaged or broken teeth, but they are also used to improve the appearance of teeth.  For example, they are used to close gaps in between teeth, cover dark stains, make teeth appear even and more. Patients throughout the country use dental crowns to transform the natural appearance of their smile while keeping their teeth in place.

Dental veneers are a similar concept that was also made possible by the invention of resin cement.  A veneer is a thin shell that is bonded to the surface of the tooth and can accomplish similar goals to a dental crown only it doesn’t surround the tooth and, therefore, needs less preparation.  Hollywood celebrities are widely known for their use of veneers, and we wouldn’t have the term “Hollywood Smile” without it.

In the 1990s, this simple invention made it possible for people to start replacing missing teeth without wearing dentures.  The dental bridge was invented in the 90s because resin cement made it possible for the bridge to remain in place.  A bridge works by placing a crown on the two teeth that surround the missing one.  These crowns need to be durable because they hold the bridge and replacement tooth in place.

Modern technology has continued to advance beyond dental bridges, crowns and veneers to where we are now offering dental implants to replace missing teeth.  This is a permanent way of doing so where we create a new root system by implanting a metal post under the gum line.  A crown is secured to the post for a natural and durable replacement tooth.  All of this has been made possible by continued advancements in technology and, as a result, our patients continue to benefit. To learn about the latest techniques and innovations, visit our cosmetic dentist office.

Learn More Facts About Replacing Teeth From an Implant Dentist

Implant Dentist
As an implant dentist, we know that more than 3 million Americans have dental implants today. Dentists have been successfully performing implant dentistry for the better part of fifty years, though only now has the popularity of this procedure really started to grow. Seen for many years as a cosmetic fix, oral health professionals are now advising dental implants for a host of tooth loss problems. Teeth can be lost very easily after an accident, playing sports, due to normal aging, or disease. Having a way to replace teeth and give a person back their speech patterns, their smile, and their natural look is an extremely powerful tool; one that we use on a regular basis.
What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a small titanium screw which is placed into the jawbone of a person’s mouth. An abutment is added, which is a piece that sticks out from the gum and connects the implant to the crown. Finally, a crown or a uniquely sculptured replacement tooth is placed over the abutment to finish the effect. When completed a dental implant looks and feels exactly like real teeth, giving the patient the comfort and familiarity they are used to with their naturally occurring teeth.
How much does a dental implant cost?
Dental implants have been slowly going down in price. However, they are still costly to get and often can be cost prohibitive to those who need a replacement tooth.   A single tooth implant can cost between $1,500 and $3,000 with an additional cost of $500 to $3,000 for the crown. Many factors come into play when pricing out an implant, including the amount of support work that will need to be done, the number of teeth to be replaced, extractions, and other treatment that might become necessary around the implant. Also, one has to factor in the type of implant and the materials to be used. As an implant dentist, we can give you a precise quote after a consultation.
What is the process of getting a dental implant?
The process of getting an implant can take up to six months when you consider healing time. To start the process, we will discuss all the options available to you. Next, you will be scheduled for a comprehensive examination and consultation. Once you decide to proceed with the implant, we will take an imprint of the tooth to be replaced along with the gums and nearby teeth. This allows the crown to be customized to fit your mouth perfectly.
On the day of the surgery, we will implant a small screw or post into your jawbone. It is placed into the socket of the missing tooth and allowed to heal. Healing takes between six to twelve weeks. On your return a small connector post, known as an abutment, will be attached to the implant. The abutment sticks out above the gum line and connects, on the other end, to the crown. An additional two to three weeks of healing are required after the abutment is placed. Finally, the dentist will install your crown or replacement tooth to the abutment. Following some checks and tweaks to ensure your bite is perfect, you will have a perfect new replacement tooth.

How a Sleep Dentist Helps People With Sensitive Teeth

Sleep Dentist
As a local sleep dentist, we treat people with sensitive teeth on a regular basis. Teeth can become sensitive for a variety of reasons, and when they do, it is difficult for patients to receive treatment because they are already in pain.  We can ensure that our patients are comfortable, and sleeping, during their procedures so that the issue causing the sensitivity can be addressed while keeping patients comfortable.

One of the common reasons for sensitivity is a lack of enamel.  The enamel is the hard outer layer of the tooth.  It is strong and durable but can wear away over time due to a lack of oral health care, brushing too rigorously or eating and drinking certain foods.  As it wears away, dentin is exposed, and since dentin is porous, this can lead to pain. The tiny holes in the dentin contain nerve endings.  As sensations are transmitted through the holes to your roots and to your brain, you can start to feel pain.  This can be addressed with a bonding procedure to seal in the dentin or by having dental crowns placed.

As a sleep dentist, we regularly treat people that are suffering from gum disease.  This condition can become very uncomfortable, lead to infection, and even tooth loss.  Gum disease occurs when bacteria gathers on and under the gums.  Once it is underneath the gums, it needs to be removed through a deep cleaning.  We can do this while patients are sleeping so that there is no discomfort.  After a deep cleaning is performed, the gums will typically heal themselves.

If gum disease spreads to a more advanced stage, the gums will start to recede.  As they do, pockets are created in the gum tissue where bacteria tend to gather.  Since more of the tooth and roots are exposed, the bacteria can start to attack the lower part of the tooth, roots, and the infection can lead to bone loss.  This is a serious condition that can eventually lead to a person losing their teeth.  In order to heal the gums in this stage, we perform a gum graft surgery to close the pockets and protect the tooth.  This can also be done while patients are sleeping to ensure that they are entirely comfortable.

When the enamel is strong, and there is no sign of gum disease, the sensitivity is likely caused by a standard cavity.  The larger a cavity becomes, the more painful it will be and the higher the chance of an infection settling into your jawbone.  This can be incredibly uncomfortable, so we recommend scheduling a dental exam at the first sign of pain.  If a cavity is treated right away, it will be a fast and easy procedure.  If an infection spreads and gets into the jawbone, oral surgery is often required in order to drain the infection so that the mouth can start to heal.  As a sleep dentist, we can assist with this procedure and help our patients to feel better quickly.
If you have sensitive teeth, schedule an appointment to find out why.

Recovery Tips for After Your Implant Dentistry Procedure

Implant Dentistry
If you are planning an implant dentistry procedure – that’s excellent news. You will love the results because implants give you the ability to enjoy all of your favorite foods, maintain an active lifestyle, play sports, sing, and laugh uproariously without worrying about your new tooth becoming loose or falling out.  This is much better than wearing dentures as they can limit your daily activities.

The reason implants are so strong and durable is that a metal post is implanted under the gums and secured to the jawbone.  This post will eventually fuse with the bone through a process known as osseointegration. Once the two elements have fused together, you will have a new root system that is just as strong as a natural one.  A synthetic tooth is then created in a dental lab and attached to a metal post.  The entire process can take several months as it takes time for osseointegration to be completed.  The wait is well worth it because in the end you will be able to play sports and eat your favorite foods without concern that your tooth will come out or become loose.

Since the metal post is inserted under the gums there is a surgical element to any implant dentistry procedure.  This means that certain steps must be taken in order to have a quick and speedy recovery.  Here is what we recommend.

Take some time off of work.

This is not a simple teeth cleaning.  Permanently replacing a tooth is a complicated procedure that requires you resting afterwards.  Take some time off of work, grab a good book, some new movies and hit the couch.  This is an excellent time to unwind and focus on getting well.  By resting, your body can focus on the healing process.  Additionally, you should avoid playing sports, running, or any aggressive activity that could bump, push, or pull on the implants.  They need to be left in place to heal so take it easy for a few days.

Watch your diet.

Make sure to eat soft foods only.  Things like yogurt, soup, and apple sauce are excellent options for the first week because they don’t pose any risk to the implants.  Stock up before your procedure so that there is food ready to go in the fridge, and you won’t be tempted to pull out easier snacks that could be hard for your gums.  Anything that can leave crumbs should be avoided.  You must also stay away from alcohol and tobacco products since they are bad for the health of your mouth and will slow down the healing process.

Take care of your gums.

It is normal for your gums to feel sore, swollen, and even bleed after the dental implants procedure.  You can use gauze or a moist tea bag to control the bleeding, ice to stop the swelling, and pain medication to help you feel comfortable.

After a week, your gums will start to feel better, and we will inspect them during a follow-up examination.  We will keep you informed about what activities are okay to do and what foods you can eat.  Before you know it, you will have a beautiful new tooth that is durable and strong.

How Visiting a Periodontist Can Improve Your Gum Health

Periodontist
If your gums are in pain, visit a periodontist so that we can help you to feel better right away.  For many adults, gum disease is something that they live with.  The level of gum disease determines how bad the pain is and whether or not there are additional complications.  For example, while in its early stages, gingivitis can make gums swollen, and they may be uncomfortable but not particularly painful.  As the condition spreads, gums start to recede, and pockets can be formed in the gum tissue.  This is particularly dangerous because bacteria can gather in these pockets and attack the exposed tooth and roots.

Regardless, of what stage of gum disease you have – it is important to seek treatment right away so that the disease can be removed, and your gums can start to heal.  If you don’t, your teeth may become severely infected and fall out. This will lead to the need for an additional procedure, so it is better to simply treat gum disease early and avoid this situation.

A periodontist is a specialist at treating gum disease, and we perform these procedures on a regular basis.  There are several types of treatment options to consider.

Chao Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation
This treatment is extremely popular because it can be completed over your lunch break with no downtime.  This makes it an easy solution for fixing gums that have receded.  In only one visit patients see amazing results and gums look youthful again.  There are no stiches, so it is ideal for people that have a busy schedule but still need to have a treatment completed.

Gum Grafts
As a periodontist, we specialize in gum grafts.  Most general dentists don’t perform the procedure; so many of our patients are referred to us for this treatment after their teeth have been thoroughly cleaned.  This procedure is also known as gum plastic surgery because by the end of the procedure, the exposed area of your tooth and roots will be covered.  In order to complete a gum graft, we can take tissue from the roof of your mouth and graft it to your gums which will close the gap. This helps to prevent infections and also reduces any sensitivity that would have been caused by something that touches the exposed roots and tooth.

When having a procedure like these conducted it is important to visit an experienced periodontist.  This is a special field of dentistry that requires additional years of schooling and training in order to complete gum grafts and other gum treatments with precision.  As with any type of medical procedure, if you visit a dentist that conducts surgery on a regular basis they will be better at it and your risk of complications will be reduced.  On the other hand if you visited a family doctor for heart surgery, the results probably wouldn’t be what you wanted.  The same holds true for dentistry; so we recommend that if your dentist has told you that you need surgery or a type of gum graft, you call us for a consultation to examine your gums and make recommendations as to what needs to be done.

Football Season is Here and More Athletes are Depending on Dental Implants

Dental Implants
Sports season is in its full glory and dental implants are being used by athletes across the world to replace missing teeth.  As the kids head back to school and sports and football games dominate the television, it is important to remember that teeth can easily become the first victim in the game.  The American Dental Association reported that between 13 and 39 percent of tooth loss happens as the result of a sporting injury and that $500 million is spent per year on replacing those teeth.

We are an expert in replacing missing teeth and do so in a way that appears completely natural.  We know how to position teeth just right and how to create new ones that blend in so well, you can’t tell which one is real and which one is not. This is good news for everyone that will lose a tooth while playing sports this Fall.
When a tooth falls out there are several options for replacing it.  Dentures have been a solution for hundreds of years but are not convenient for active people.  Athletes and adults with busy lives don’t want to worry about their teeth becoming loose or falling out and realistically they don’t have time to think about their teeth at all.  With dentures, that is never a possibility but it is with dental implants.

During the procedure, we implant a metal post under the gums and secure it to the jawbone.  Over the course of several months, the bone and metal will fuse together and create a new root system that is as secure as a natural one.  In fact, since metal cannot become infected, it may be more secure than natural roots.  Once this phase of the process is complete, we secure a new tooth to the metal post, and the results are amazing.  The new tooth will look like a natural one, and no one will be able to tell the difference.

One famous football player that used dental implants to replace missing teeth is “The Fridge.”  As a defensive lineman for the Chicago Bears, this 380 pound player started to feel pain in his teeth.  Overtime the problems became worse, and his four front teeth fell out.  This caused embarrassment in addition to the pain.  In order to address the issue, he had implants, and the missing teeth were restored. This transformed his smile and his appearance.  Whether you are an athlete or not, implants can do the same for you.

Warning to basketball players –
It is commonly thought that football is the most dangerous sports.  This is true in some categories, for example, brain injuries.  It is incorrect when it comes to dental injuries. The University of California reviewed the accident reports from their athletic department over the course of nine years and found that basketball players were the most likely to sustain a dental injury.  In fact, 11 out of every 100 players filed a report for a dental injury.  If your child is playing basketball – purchase a mouth guard.  If you happen to lose a tooth while playing, call us to discuss how implant dentistry can restore your tooth.

Protect Your Dental Implants by Keeping Your Teeth and Gums Healthy

Dental Implants
If you have lost a tooth, dental implants are an ideal solution for replacing it.  Many patients will have implants installed as a permanent solution for missing teeth or to correct challenges with teeth that orthodontics have been unable to correct.  This is a natural looking and durable solution that allows patients to eat their favorite foods and maintain an active lifestyle.

An implant does not depend on the surrounding teeth to stay in place.  In this way, it is like a natural tooth with its own unique root system.  By implanting a metal post under the gums and securing it to the jawbone, each implant has its own synthetic root system which is just as strong. This is what allows people to enjoy staying active and eating foods that may be considered too hard or sticky for dentures.

Generally, dental implants will stay in excellent condition over time.  They are created out of ceramic which is stain resistant and won’t become infected.  Additionally, since the root system is now a metal post, there is no risk of infection to the roots.  This is a benefit that patients get with an implant over natural teeth.

It is important to note that teeth still need to be maintained in good health.  While the implant itself cannot become infected, the teeth around it can.  Bacteria can still become trapped in between the implant and the surrounding natural teeth.  Brushing teeth twice a day, and flossing daily are important for ensuring that every tooth remains healthy.  Gums can also become infected and keeping bacteria off of them is the best way to prevent this.

Unhealthy teeth and gums pose a risk to dental implants.  If a cavity or small infection is allowed to spread, it can grow into a dental abscess which can reach into the jawbone.  This is extremely painful and may even require surgery in order to stop the infection.  The problem is that if the jawbone becomes infected, the implant will be in jeopardy.  Implants depend on the strength of the jawbone for stability.  In the long-run, this is an excellent solution, but it does mean that a dental abscess could create problems with the implant.

Having teeth cleaned twice a year can help to prevent an infection from developing in the first place or spreading if it does.  The key is to have a cavity or gum disease treated right away.  In the early stages, they are not painful, and the infection can easily be removed.  This is the most convenient option.  Problems arise when the infection is left untreated for a prolonged period of time.  Even if you don’t want to visit the dentist twice a year, doing so can prevent a lot of pain and suffering down the road.  The health of your mouth and your dental implants will be improved by taking this simple preventative step.

How a Sleep Dentist Can Create a Pleasant Dental Experience

Sleep Dentist
Have you ever wished that a sleep dentist existed? Well, they do.  As with many types of health procedures, not being awake or able to feel any pain is a major benefit for people that are afraid of pain or have anxiety when getting any work done on their teeth.

This is extremely common.  In fact, around 25 million Americans report having some level of dental anxiety.  This doesn’t mean that everyone is too scared to have dental work performed but it does prevent many people from getting the procedures done that are necessary for improving their overall health.

A sleep dentist can alleviate these fears by putting a patient to sleep while they are getting dental work performed.  This way they do not feel anything and are completely unaware of what is happening.  Oftentimes pain and fear will go hand in hand.  When a patient is scared of what is happening their body can naturally tense up which makes things even more painful.  This is why people that are relaxed tend to feel less pain and even recover faster after injuries.

Going to sleep can be particularly helpful when having major dental work performed like getting dental veneers or dental implants.  Implants, for example, have a surgical component to the procedure where a metal post is implanted under the gums and secured to the jawbone.  This can be uncomfortable and create anxiety in patients. Through the use of sedation dentistry, we can help patients relax and go to sleep while the metal posts are being implanted.  By the time a patient wakes up the procedure will be complete.

There are several types of sedation that are commonly used.  Laughing gas is used to simply calm the nerves and help a patient to relax and feel at ease during an appointment.  Oral sedatives can accomplish the same goal.  The challenge is that simply relaxing isn’t enough to eliminate the pain so many people want this in combination with pain relief
.
Local anesthesia can be used to numb the specific area that is being worked on.  This is commonly done when a cavity is treated so that a patient won’t feel pain from the procedure but the rest of the area is not numb, allowing patients to move and respond to commands without assistance.
.
Deep sedation can be achieved by delivering a stronger medication through an IV.  This can help a patient to fall asleep during their dental procedure so that they do not feel anything and are unaware of their surroundings.  Only expert dentists and oral surgeons can use this level of sedation because it requires additional training and the ability to monitor patients closely since in this state, a patient is unable to move or respond to commands on their own.  The benefit is that the procedure will be completely relaxing.

As a sleep dentist, we specialize in keeping our patients comfortable during oral surgery and can discuss the options for doing so in detail during a consultation.

A Cosmetic Dentist Does More Than Create Gorgeous Smiles

Cosmetic Dentist
It is a common misconception that a cosmetic dentist simply focusses on whitening teeth and creating gorgeous smiles.  The reputation is well deserved because this is the glamorous side of cosmetic dentistry and the possibilities for creating the perfect smile are endless.  However, there are many additional ways that a specialist can help patients restore damaged teeth and replace missing ones.

The Perio & Implant Center of the Monterey Bay specializes in treating complex dentistry issues.  This goes beyond simply cleaning teeth to performing in-depth oral surgeries.  Additionally, they use the latest in modern dental technology to improve the patient experience and overall results.  For example, laser dentistry is used to conduct in-depth cleanings of gum pockets in order to address gum disease.

As an experienced cosmetic dentist, Dr. Pechak, can provide the procedures patients need to address their oral health issues and to regain the functionality of a completely healthy mouth.  Here are some of the procedures that he performs at the Perio & Implant Center.
  • Sedation Dentistry. Dr. Pechak uses sedation dentistry in combination with other procedures to ensure that patients feel completely comfortable and relaxed during their treatments.  When necessary patients may even be asleep.
  • Plastic Surgery of the Gums.  He performs a variety of procedures to restore gums that have become damaged due to gum disease or gum recession.  This includes gum grafts and Chao Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation.
  • Bone Grafts.  When the jawbone has become damaged due to infection or deteriorated due to age, Dr. Pechak can conduct a bone graft to restore the missing bone.
  • Sinus Lift.  This is often used in combination with an implant procedure.  When the bone above the roots of the upper teeth has deteriorated, a sinus graft can restore and strengthen the bone so that the existing teeth and roots are not in danger of falling out, and implants can be placed as needed.
  • Dental Implants.  As a cosmetic dentist, Dr. Pechak can restore missing teeth by placing a permanent dental implant in place of the natural tooth.  By implanting a metal post underneath the gum line and securing it to the jawbone the new tooth will be completely durable and stand on its own without the assistance of the surrounding teeth.
These are only some of the procedures performed at the Perio & Implant Center.  This type of dental work goes far beyond addressing the appearance of a person’s smile.  Many of the procedures like dental implants will improve a person’s physical appearance but more importantly they improve oral health. Things like dental implants make it possible for patients to enjoy their favorite foods again and speak normally.  Bone grafts and sinus lifts make the entire jawbone more stable which promotes healthy teeth and can prevent tooth loss in general.  Laser dentistry can help to restore gums to good health.  All of these procedures and more are done by experienced cosmetic dentist, Dr. Pechak.  If you have an oral health concern visit a dentist that is experienced and can provide you with a variety of procedural options.  Call and schedule your appointment with the Perio & Implant Center today.

What is the Cause of Gum Recession?

Gum Recession
Adults over forty are at the greatest risk for gum recession.  While a common problem, if left untreated it can lead to tooth pain, infection, and gum disease.  At the Perio & Implant Center of Monterey Bay, Dr. Pechak treats gum recession and gum disease so that patients can stay in the best oral health possible.  There are ways to prevent gum recession with ongoing dental care.  When done correctly, you can stop gums from receding before they cause any damage.

It is important to understand how it develops in the first place.  Here are some of the common triggers:
  • Gum disease.  Those suffering from gum disease will often have their gums recede as well.  The best way to avoid gum disease is to brush regularly and floss along with visiting the dentist twice a year for teeth cleaning.  The dental hygienist can remove bacteria from on and around the gum line that can create an infection.  Typically, removing the bacteria is enough to prevent gum disease.
  • Flossing incorrectly.  It is important to floss gently. People that are too aggressive can cut into their gums and increase their risk of them becoming infected.
  • Aggressive brushing.  Gum recession can start due to aggressive tooth brushing.  Using a hard toothbrush increases the risk so switch to a soft or electronic one instead.  Brush thoroughly but gently in order to prevent gum irritation.
  • Stomach acid.  Those with an eating disorder or severe stomach acid may be at risk for gum recession as the acid attacks the gums and teeth.
  • Chewing tobacco.  Smokeless tobacco products increase the risk of gum disease and oral cancer. They are bad for your teeth and your gums.
  • Diabetes.  One of the signs of uncontrolled blood sugar levels is restricted blood flow to the gums.  This can lead to gum disease since diabetics in general have a more difficult time fighting off infection.
  • Lip and tongue piercings.  When the piercing rubs against the gums it can lead to damage and gum recession.
  • Genetics.  Some people are predisposed to gum recession due to their genetics.  If your parents had it you should see a dentist on a regular basis to reduce your risk.
Gum recession can often be prevented by preventing gum disease. The easiest way to do so is to take care of your teeth and gums at home then visit the dentist twice a year for a regular teeth cleaning. By removing bacteria from around the gums, your gums will naturally become healthier.  Gums that are plagued with bacteria will become more and more damaged over time.
Those who are currently suffering from gum recession will benefit from working with Dr. Pechak at the Perio & Implant Center.  As a Board Certified Periodontist, he is an expert at treating gum disease and gum recession and can perform gum plastic surgery to correct the problem.  By restoring the missing gum tissue, pain will be reduced, teeth will become more secure, and overall oral health is promoted.  To learn more, call and schedule an appointment today.

A Cosmetic Dentist Can Help with Dental Emergencies

Cosmetic Dentist
If you have a dental emergency, a cosmetic dentist can help to save and restore your tooth.  Accidents are common. Millions of people get into a car accident, slip and fall, are injured at work, or hurt while playing sports every year.  Many times these accidents also create a dental emergency.  While teeth are made of strong enamel, they are still susceptible to injury.  They can easily become cracked, chipped, or even knocked out during an accident.  Fortunately, when such unfortunate occurrences take place, a dental professional can help.
When people think of cosmetic dentistry they typically think of teeth whitening and creating gorgeous smiles.  While this is absolutely the case, it is only part of what an experienced dental professional does.  When treating dental emergencies, there are several components to the treatment.  First to stop the results of the trauma and then to correct it.  Correcting damage done requires that the tooth or teeth are restored to their former appearance and functionality.

There are several ways for a cosmetic dentist to accomplish this, including:

Dental Veneers. This is an excellent option for fixing a damaged tooth.  A dental veneer can be used when a tooth is chipped, cracked, broken or becomes severely stained as a result of the accident.  The natural tooth is saved, and the veneer is placed on top of it.  Before it can be placed the dentist will shave down the existing tooth so that when the veneer is laid on top, it will lay flat with the gum tissue.  Veneers look completely natural and can make your teeth look even more spectacular than before.  If you need to fix one or two teeth after an accident, you may want to consider having a veneer placed on all of your front teeth in order to give you a gorgeous smile at the same time.

Dental Implants.  If a tooth is knocked out and cannot be saved, a cosmetic dentist can install a dental implant.  This is a fantastic way to permanently replace a missing tooth.  A metal piece is implanted underneath the gum line and secured to the jawbone.  Once healed, a second metal piece will be attached to the first at the surface of the gum line.  A new synthetic tooth is made in a dental lab and securely attached.  Once the procedure is complete, the synthetic tooth will look completely natural and provide the same functionality as a natural one.

When the dental emergency is related to a patients’ oral health, a cosmetic dentist can help by removing infections and performing procedures like a root canal.  In a root canal, the infected dental pulp and infected roots are removed.  Once the infection is completely gone, a dental crown will be placed on top and around the tooth.  By surrounding the previously infected tooth, it serves as a protective barrier.  It can be made of a composite with the same coloring as natural teeth so that it blends in perfectly.

There are many ways to treat and correct damaged teeth.  As an experienced cosmetic dentist, we have the tools and experience necessary for doing so.  Call today to schedule an appointment.

Stopping Gum Recession in its Tracks

Gum Recession
Over eighty percent of the adult population experience gum recession.  It can be prevented and stopped before it causes pain or discomfort.  They key is preventative care to stop it in its tracks.  As soon as your gums start to experience problems, seek immediate treatment to reverse the damage.

As a periodontist, Dr. Pechak is an expert at treating gum disease.  The first step is to prevent it from ever happening.  Good preventative care can keep gums healthy.  This is done by brushing after meals, using floss on a daily basis, and rinsing with an antiseptic mouthwash to kill bacteria.  People can also keep their teeth and gums healthier by drinking plenty of water, not smoking or using tobacco products, eating a healthy diet, and visiting the dentist twice a year.  These regular dental exams give our staff the ability to remove bacteria and plaque while Dr. Pechak identifies any signs of gum disease that require further treatment.

Gum disease starts as gingivitis, which is completely treatable and reversible.  By removing bacteria from the gum line, gums can regain their natural health.  Gum recession is often caused by gum disease that is left untreated. There are additional risk factors such a hormonal changes, using tobacco products, aggressive brushing, and genetics but these can typically be mitigated by regular teeth cleanings.  Those that have a greater risk should schedule their cleaning for two or more times per year.

If Dr. Pechak identifies gum recession, he will likely start the treatment by conducting a thorough cleaning of the teeth and gums.  This can be done at the surface of the gums unless the bacteria has spread.  If so, a procedure called tooth scaling and root planning will be performed.  This is where the gum tissue is pulled back, and the bacteria underneath it is removed.  Antibiotics can also help to eliminate any lingering bacteria.  When the procedure is complete, the gum tissue will be securely placed over the tooth. Tooth scaling and root planning can help to restore the health and functionality of your gums before any more serious intervention is required.

Immediate treatment will prevent your gums from receding further and exposing your tooth, the root system, and bone structure to attacks by viscous bacteria.  Gum recession is dangerous due to that simple fact.  When the gums recede, other areas are exposed, and pockets are created where the bacteria can accumulate.  This puts the health of the tooth and entire mouth at risk.  When bacteria attacks the gums and bone it can cause an abscess, an extremely painful condition which can interrupt daily life.   An abscess is not something that can be ignored, because when the infection spreads it can get all the way into your neck, creating the need for a surgical procedure to drain out the infection. This is a highly unpleasant scenario that can be avoided by simply treating gum disease and gum recession early.

If you notice that your teeth are more sensitive or appear longer, you may have the early signs of gum recession.  If this is the case, call the Perio & Implant Center of the Monterey Bay to schedule an appointment for a dental examination and teeth cleaning.

How a Cosmetic Dentist Can Straighten Your Teeth

Cosmetic Dentist
Beautiful teeth are possible with a cosmetic dentist. If you want a glamorous smile, there are ways to accomplish that goal that are not painful and can be accomplished fairly quickly.  Event people with crooked teeth can benefit from seeing a dentist that can straighten them through cosmetic procedures.

We recommend that before you fix the appearance of your smile you start by improving your health.  Healthy teeth and gums are essential for staying healthy overall, and this requires both at-home care and in-office dental treatments.  Make sure to brush, floss, and rinse with antiseptic mouthwash daily.  This will prevent bacteria and plaque from building up.  You should also visit the dentist twice a year for regular teeth cleanings and examinations.

Once your teeth and gums are healthy, we can focus on cosmetic procedures to improve your smile.  There are several ways that a cosmetic dentist can improve your smile and straighten your teeth, including:
·         Dental Veneers.  We can place dental veneers over the top of your existing teeth.  This is an efficient way to improve your smile because dental veneers look perfect, bright, and beautiful.  Since they are placed on top of your existing teeth, the procedure is less invasive than implants.  Veneers can be placed on some or all of your teeth.  They are created in a lab to match your teeth color and shape.  Your existing teeth are filed down prior to them being placed so that they lay flat and underneath your gum line.
·         Dental Implants.  You can permanently straighten your smile with dental implants.  Implants replace your current or missing teeth and root system.  In this procedure, a metal piece is implanted underneath the gum line and secured to your jaw bone.  The two will eventually fuse together, creating a strong synthetic root system.  A second metal piece is secured at the base of the gum line and your new tooth will be attached to that.  Since your new tooth (or teeth) are created in a lab, they are perfectly sized and placed to create a stunning smile.  This is actually more effective than braces because, by replacing the root system, your teeth won’t “move back” over time.
·         Invisalign.  If you want to straighten your teeth without a cosmetic procedure or traditional braces, Invisalign is an ideal option.  Clear aligners are created for the duration of your treatment plan.  Every couple of weeks you replace your aligner at home, and over time your teeth will move into place.  The aligners are like a clear retainer so no one will know that you are in the process of correcting your smile. This is ideal for working professionals that need to maintain a corporate image.

Before starting the procedure to straighten your teeth, we recommend that you schedule an in-office teeth whitening.  Your teeth can become up to eight shades whiter in a single visit.  It is affordable and makes a great impact.  As a cosmetic dentist, we will match your veneers or implants to the color of your existing teeth.  Whitening your teeth first will make sure that your entire smile is bright, white, beautiful, and stunning.

Dentist Tips for Stopping Gum Recession

Gum Recession
We can help to prevent gum recession and correct it once started.  Your gums are extremely important for the overall health of your mouth.  Gums hold your teeth in place and cover up sensitive roots, preventing bacteria and plaque from reaching them.  Poor gum health may eventually lead to tooth loss, in addition to pain.
As a local dentist, we help patients to stay healthy.  There are many things that can lead to poor oral health.  This includes not brushing and flossing enough and not visiting the dentist on a regular basis.  Fortunately, there are simple things you can do to stay healthy.  Here are our favorite tips.
·         Visit the dentist twice a year.  You can brush and floss daily and still not reach all of the bacteria that forms in your mouth.  There are some areas that are simply too difficult to get to.  A professional teeth cleaning will remove the plaque and bacteria that you were unable to reach.  We can also remove tartar which is a harder substance and nearly impossible to remove on your own.  These regular visits can keep you in good health and prevent gum recession.
·         Pay attention to risk factors.  If you are a smoker, you are at greater risk for all types of oral health issues due to the sticky plaque that is caused by smoking.  This plaque can lead to cavities and gum disease.  Another risk factor is hormonal changes.  Puberty, pregnancy, and menopause can all put women at greater risk for sensitive gums and oral health problems.  If you are at greater risk ask your dentist how often you should have your teeth cleaned.  You may need to come in more frequently than twice a year.
·         At home routine.  While, at home, you should brush your teeth with a soft toothbrush at least twice a day, floss daily, and use an antiseptic mouthwash daily.  These three things combined will help to remove bacteria and prevent plaque from forming.  At home care is essential for maintaining the health of your gums and teeth.
·         Correct your bite.  If your bite is off it will place additional pressure on your teeth and gums which can cause gum recession.  When you correct your bite, the rest of your mouth will thank you.
·         Stay hydrated.  Your mouth needs to produce saliva in order to wash away bacteria.  In order to do so, your body needs to stay hydrated so drink plenty of water.  If you don’t like the taste of water try a sugar free drink instead.

Gum recession is a serious condition that can lead to a lot of pain.  As gums recede, pockets can form in between the teeth and gum line where bacteria can hide and grow.  These exposed areas will make your teeth and gums more sensitive while the bacteria attacks your teeth and can cause tooth decay or the need for a root canal.  We can do a deep cleaning of your gums both at and underneath your gum line to remove bacteria.  Once removed, your gums will start to feel healthier again, and the severe, permanent damage can be corrected.  Call us to schedule an appointment today.

What You Need to Know About Oral Surgery

Oral Surgery
Modern technology has improved oral surgery, making it less painful and easier to recover from.  The staff at the Perio and Implant Center are experts and able to help patients to be as comfortable as possible.  We stay on top of the latest technological improvements so that you receive the best care possible.
There are several reasons why you may need a surgical procedure, including:

·         Impacted teeth.  It is common for people to have their wisdom teeth removed surgically, as they often don’t come in enough to pull them. When teeth become impacted it can cause swelling and pain, requiring surgery to have them removed.
·         Dental Implants.  This is a surgical procedure that can replace your existing or lost teeth with a synthetic root system and a new tooth.  The results are amazing but before a new tooth can be implanted, the root system needs to be placed under the gum line surgically.
·         Problems with your jaw.  Some patients that are suffering from severe jaw pain may need to have oral surgery.  This is only recommended after other treatment options have been exhausted.

If you need oral surgery here is what you should know prior to arriving for the procedure.

·         This is an outpatient procedure.  You will be able to return home the same day and will not be admitted into a hospital, as you would if you had surgery on any other part of your body.  Your dentist will use local or general anesthesia, and once the effects are worn off, you can typically head home.

·         You will need a driver.  You cannot drive yourself home after undergoing anesthesia.  Make sure you have a ride scheduled to drop you off and pick you up.  This person should also help to settle you in at home in a comfortable spot with water, pain medication, blankets, books, and anything else you need to stay comfortable.

·         Ice it.  Your mouth will be sore and my start to swell.  You can ease the swelling by using an ice pack for fifteen minutes, resting for fifteen minutes, and repeating.  Buy several soft ice packs prior to your surgery so that while you are using one there is always another cooling in the freezer.

·         What to eat.  Eating can be painful immediately following surgery.  We recommend that you stick with soft foods.  Cooler, soft foods, will feel the best at first.  This includes jello, ice creme, yogurt, popsicles, and smoothies.  Drinking smoothies is an excellent way to get the nutrition that you need without causing yourself additional pain.  Load them up with superfoods like kale, potassium rich bananas, berries, and yogurt.  Add protein powder or peanut butter for protein nutrition. Do not eat crunchy foods like chips or pretzels for six weeks or more.  This can cause you significant pain.

·         Healing time.  The first 48 hours are going to be the most painful.  After that, you should start to resume normal activity, though you may not feel well.  It can take up to two months before you are eating everything like normal.

We will make sure that you are as comfortable as possible during and after an oral surgery.  At your pre surgery appointment, we will answer any questions that you have and discuss your treatment plan in detail to ensure that you are properly prepared.
